Nathaniel Hale grew up in Rochester, New York. Named after the legendary war hero, Hale’s father was an officer in the Air Force stationed at the McGuire AAFB. At a young age, Hale hated the military and what it stood for, but loved to fly. Hale began flying Cessna’s at age 14. Years of flying have given him a solid understanding of mathematics, weather patterns, geography, flight dynamics, some basic physics and mechanical skills.
All these skill sets are displayed in a myriad of ways throughout the series. When asked what he remembers, Hale recounts the memory of flying from Washington, DC to Toronto when he entered severe storms and turbulence with extremely poor visibility.
It was almost like flying through an ash cloud which seemed to come out of nowhere.

Born in Michigan, Hatch’s father was a member of one of the largest factions of the Michigan Militia. Even at the age of five, Hatch was traveling the US in his father’s beat-up pickup, attending gun shows and Militia gatherings. After basic training and learning the ropes as a Private, it wasn’t long before Hatch made Private First Class, then Corporal before his 30th birthday in 2011. This is the same year Evelyn became a 2LT and the two met each other for the first time.
Aline Dos Santos is a trained medic doing double duty as Tank Loader, and one of the few who ever gets to step outside the Vault. She assists McKinley on the survey mission that leads them to Hale.
Being one of the few women left on Earth, she is of course sought after by many of the men, especially Hatch who finds her assertiveness irresistible. However, it’s the mysterious new guy Hale she’s got her eyes on… and don’t think Hatch hasn’t noticed.
Trained heavily by the Canadian Armed Forces, this soldier was destined to be a marksman. He is now believed to be the number 1 marksman alive today. That’s also because all the other marksmen in the world are presumed dead. Without much need for a marksman, he is promoted to Tank Commander. It is McKinely, who first finds our hero Hale in an abandoned field hospital.
In preparation for the eventual production of The Vault, producer/director Sara Martins and cinematographer Tyson Burger took advantage of ideal weather conditions to shoot a series of camera tests, helping the creative team determine certain aspects of location, lighting, wardrobe, and makeup decisions.
The tests were filmed in 5K on a Red Dragon camera using Nikon AI-S lenses.
Movie Armaments Group, a Toronto based service provider helped provide wardrobe and select props for testing. See the full video here available in 4K UHD.
